Your eyes are covered by a three-layer tear film (oil, water, mucus). At night, that film is vulnerable: blink-driven spreading stops, lids may not close fully, and ambient air can pull moisture off the surface. If humidity is low or air is blowing across your face, evaporation accelerates and the corneal surface becomes irritated by morning.

Key idea: The bedroom is the easiest place to control your “micro-climate.” Small tweaks in humidity and airflow often reduce morning dryness dramatically.

Humidity: Finding the “Goldilocks” Zone

Low humidity (very dry air) increases tear evaporation and can thin the lipid (oil) layer, destabilizing the film. Airflow: Vents, Fans, and CPAP Leaks

Directed airflow over open or partially open eyelids increases evaporative loss. Common culprits:

  • Ceiling fans / box fans: constant breeze over the face.
  • HVAC vents: supply registers aimed at the pillow area.
  • CPAP/BiPAP leaks: even a small edge leak can jet air toward one eye.

Fixes: redirect vents, use ceiling fans on lower settings (or off), and adjust CPAP mask fit or cushion style to eliminate upward leaks. Consider a lightweight sleep shield or moisture chamber goggles if you must use a fan.


Temperature and Tear Film Stability

Temperature shifts can alter evaporation rates and may influence the lipid layer’s behavior. Extremely warm air tends to accelerate evaporation; very cold, heated winter air is often both cool and dry. Most people do best keeping the bedroom in a comfortable mid-range (roughly the standard room-comfort band) and avoiding large overnight swings.


Pollutants, Allergens, and Bioaerosols

Particulate matter, ozone/NO2, indoor smoke, and allergens (dust mite, pet dander, mold) can inflame the ocular surface and destabilize the tear film. Indoors, raised particle counts often come from old filters, candles/incense, cooking aerosols, or dusty bedding.

  • Use a HEPA room purifier near the bed; replace filters on schedule.
